Pastor-Penitent Privilege

I've had a lot of fun conversations with friends recently.  Here are a few of them:

I had dinner with Stan and Melissa a few weeks ago.  One of the best exchanges from that dinner conversation was the following:

Melissa: "You know, I would always say that Gary is such a good guy, and then I'd sigh.  I don't do that anymore."
Stan: "She means sigh.  She doesn't sigh anymore."

One night after ICF, I put on my hat.  Because the hat has ear flaps, Andrea said I looked like Eeyore.  My reply: "So you're calling me an ass..."  Andrea was too stunned to reply.  The proper reply would have been, "Well if the hat fits..."

Talking with David is always a pleasant experience.  Last night, I saw him watching a Spanish-dubbed version of Cradle 2 the Grave.  We started talking about the different people in the movie, and he named Jet Li and Kelly Hu.

David: "I think there's some rapper in the movie too."
Me: "Oh, I think that might be DMX."
David: "Yeah, DMX. That sounds right."

And tonight, I found out that David knows who Lil' Wayne and Lady GaGa are.  And he previously liked Chris Brown, before news of his Rihanna beatings came out.

Finally, work has been crazy busy.  To keep calm among all the deadlines, I remember something TMQ says: "Don't panic, there will be plenty of time for that later."

Snow Days

Work has been incredibly busy the past few weeks and I'm glad I finally have the chance to take a breath and get back to the Borg scrapbook.  There's actually a slight backlog of stuff I've been meaning to capture, so hopefully the next few days will see a stream of new posts.

Now that I'm no longer in grad school, I have a very different opinion of snow days.  As a grad student, I loved snow days, because they allowed me to "work" from home, cozy and warm, without having to worry about going out into the cold.  Now, I have to actually work from home while taking occasional breaks to go shovel snow.  At least the shoveling turns into a house event:

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I don't have a picture with Alex, since he moved out before the first snowfall this winter.

Fred also moved out a few weeks ago.  I've missed having him around the house; he has this way of bringing a quiet dignity to everything he does.  Like when he ratted out a certain someone for hitting me in the back with a snowball after church.   "Yes, she did it.  I saw it," Fred said in his typical Fred-tone.  Ok, it was probably funnier in person to hear Fred throw someone under the bus like that.  It was absolutely great.  Best wishes on your new life, Fred!

Oh, and I've got a backlog of music too.

Feeling The Same Way

I've been meaning to add one more year-end retrospective post of random events and one-liners from 2008 but given the date, it's probably best to start anew and look forward to 2009.  2008 was quite momentous, but as I've seen this past weekend, a lot happens during the small, quiet, and outwardly mundane times too.  I think 2009 will provide a lot of chances for me to enjoy times like that.

For example, a lot happens when people get together to cook.  One-liners come up a lot, like the following which came up as me and a bunch of friends were preparing Fred's going-away lunch:

Friend 1 (to me): You're such a dork.
Friend 2 (to Friend 1): Surprise!

Point -> Friend 2.

The Year In Pictures

It's always a fun experience going through the Borg Scrapbook to see what were some of the top moments from the past year.  Since I blogged a whole lot less this year than last (I wrote a little over half as many entries this year than I did last year) I was actually wondering what would show up on this year-end review.  Although there were fewer random blog entries written (probably due to me finishing up my thesis and starting work), I didn't have any problems finding entries that were highlight worthy.

The big event, of course, was finishing my PhD and finally graduating.  Jimmy's wedding was another big event, as was Summerbridge.  Looking back, it was a pretty fun year.  Of course, I don't write everything down in this blog, but I guess the pics below give a decent summary for the casual reader.  Click on any thumbnail to read more.

And that's a wrap on 2008.

Currently playing: Seasons of Love, the remixed version featuring Stevie Wonder.

It's time now - to sing out
Tho' the story never ends
Let's celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends

... Remember the love
Measure in love
